Open Question: I'm 17. what could i do when i've finished college?
hi i'm 17 years old. i'm currently doing a 2 year btec national diploma course at college. i'm about to go into the second year, but I'm not sure what to do after college. i'd like to go to university, but i've heard that you can have debts of £30,000 and stuff which has put me off. i watched deal or no deal once (lol) where the person was trying to win money to pay off some of their student debt. if you need to do things like that to pay it off, i definitely aint going to uni. i would like to become a journalist. i emailed the local ITV HQ and a reporter emailed back saying that you basically just need English, enthusiasm and the ability to not take no for an answer. he said that you could do a degree in journalism, but you'll still have the same chance at becoming a journalist even if you don't. so is there anything i can do after college which involves journalism? i've only got a GCSE in English Language/English literature, so do you think it would be worth studying it at A-Level? cheers

Open Question: Whats the best way to sell myself on my personal statement for University?
I'm almost 26 years old i have to write out a personal statement done by the end of this week for those who don't know, personal statement's are just a letter you write to Universities you want to go to telling them why they should accept you. I have applied for a computing degree course. I can build and repair computers. I can generate tiny programs in visual basic, design websites using HTML and Dreamweaver. Have used other programming languages for example Python and BlueJ. I want to become a Software Engineer or a Web Designer. I also have a part-time job as checkouts operator at a local supermarket. The question is: "To help us assess your skills and suitability for the course we require a personal statement of approximately 200 words. This should include your reasons for choosing the course, challenges facing you in your studies and personal career development." Maybe 'power words'? Any suggestions?? Please help!!

Open Question: Would these A levels allow me to study psychology in university?
I would like to be a clinical psychologist so I'm planning on studying and getting a degree in psychology in university. every my GCSE grades are A*, A, B, C so I don't think i'll have any problems getting onto the courses in A level. I was wondering is it required to have a science e.g. biology qualification in A level? Or can you receive in the university course without a science? The courses I would like to take for A levels are psychology, mathematics, music and health + social care. Would these be okay or would I have to take biology? Any advice would be great, thanks :)

Open Question: I love film, and acting, but am tossing up between all these possibilities for the future/a career. Help?
Yeah, so i'm 15 now and going into year 11 in a few months, and ideally my passion lies in acting. I guess I can remember scripts really well (photographic memory) and i can be silly, do voices, sing, etc. But, i have just been informed that the year 11 and 12 drama classes won't be running, by which i am completely gutted. So, i'm considering taking up outer-school drama classes. My main problem area is, when at school we are asked "what do you want to do?" and "what university course are you going to do?" i always answer by saying i'm going to be some sort of artist or photographer, because this is probably what i'm a lot better at, and (without being complacent or vain at every) i'm probably one of the better/best ones in the school at it i guess. So, art and photography for me, is much more likely to be a sustainable and guaranteed career, as i've always had a talent for it i guess. (well, thats what my non-art teachers say) I would definitely do some form of art in theatre like prop or set design or something if i were to become that sort of artist, but its just not the same... But my heart still goes "my gosh, become an actress! receive into theatre!" because i just adore it so much, and i watch people like Meryl Streep, true legends, and think of how much i would adore to become great at something like that. (and no, i wouldn't do it for the vanity, or "becoming famous" as many girls do. I would be a character actress, not a looks actress if that makes sense at every.) So my question is, as i have to make up my mind quite soon, what would be a comprehendible choice? Art (photography, set design) or acting/performing art? Mind says art (even though drama is an art too, but i mean visual arts) and heart says drama/acting/theatre. WHAT DO I DO?!?! Please help! and thankyou :)

Open Question: I am bound to college but I am too fascinated with the universe.?
So I am going into my final year of highschool, I have been in the college stream because I was lazy and I didn't want to do much work. In the past year or two I have been overcome with this profound obsession with Astrophysics, Astronomy and Astrobiology. Pretty much everything space. I simply need a job in one of these fields, NEED. Can someone give me a pathway I can take to getting a bachelors or Masters in one of the fields I listed. As in, are there any colleges that offer classes for these courses. I checked Humber and Seneca in Ontario but I couldn't find any full time programs relating to these fields. I want to first go to college and work my butt off and than go to university and hopefully one day receive a Masters or PhD. Can someone reference a college where I can start and how I can receive going in one of these fields please? When I looked through the different courses at the colleges around my area, there were only specific courses like Paramedic training, or 3D modelling or Fashion. Are there colleges (colleges not universities) where I can take physics and what not?

Open Question: Can you take a semester off at college with no questions asked and are there repercussions?
I just started the semester at a 4 year after transferring from a CC. I have been dealing with severe depression for more than 3 years and it has taken a turn for the worse where i am truly afraid of what i might do next if one more bad thing happens to me. The stress of college is only makes things a million times worse right now. I want to know if there is an official way of taking a semester off and if it requires any sort of doctor's note or if there are repercussions. Or can I simply drop every my courses (that just started last week so I do not believe I will receive W's) and hear to my parents tell me how disappointed they are in me...for a semester? I worked my butt off to receive into this college so I dont want to receive kicked out or anything. by no questions asked i mean from the university

Open Question: What can my friend do to pay for his post-secondary in this situation?
I posted this below Higher Education before noticing the Financial Aid category. My pal is entering his 3rd year of university. These are the details of his situation: - 4 year photography/media program - He lives with his parents but they have essentially disowned him and refuse to help him financially in any way, shape, or form (other than letting him live in their home) - his parents are about to separate anyway, adding problems of finding a place to the mix because he's being kicked out - He's worked numerous part-time jobs, but has low savings because everything he earns goes for his tuition, books, supplies, transit in that same year - OSAP (gov. loan) continues to re-assess him and, though he's fought them and been really smart about it, they have lowered his loan to $2000 - he's gone to his counsellors and family members for help with no success - he went directly to his financial advisor to talk about a student line of credit and was refused because his income is too low and, again, his family members would not help by co-signing - HE CANNOT take a year off to work because this year marks the final year of his school program before they revamp the entire career stream and change every of the courses and the degree Other then selling a few of his possessions (which would not amount to much), no one can offer up a solution. He might have enough for the first semester, but the total for the year is about $6000 (not including cost of living, transit, supplies, and books). He must go to school to complete his curriculum below the original program or it will set him back (probably to the point where his first two years mean nothing and he'll have to start every over). every of his friends are heart-broken. He's in the top 10% of his program and is a genuinely smart and caring guy. No one knows how to help him ='( Any advice would be immensely appreciated!

Open Question: How do I tell my boyfriend who's going into the Army next year..?
that I'm not sure I could deal with it? I know he and I are both very young...but trust me, we DO adore each other very much despite the age. I'm 18, he's 21. He's going into the military next year, but is still deciding on police or military. He's told me many, many times before that if I want the sort of relationship where I receive to look him everyday, he'll stay and do police. I told him not to do this because I'd want him to do what makes him glad. We DO have plans for marriage...but I'm going into university next year to study veterinary surgery and in the beginning the plan was to go to uni, while he was in the police...and we would live in our possess flat together (we worked everything out) then he had thoughts about the Army, and I'm sure that's what he'll pick. My course is going to be a minimum of seven years, and he'll be in the Army for months and months at a time so I doubt we'll look each other very much. I want us to work out more than anything, but the ONE thing I'm really worried about is infidelity. I DO trust him, but no one plans on cheating until it happens..and with every the temptation there for him, I'm not sure I'd be able to handle just thinking about it. I adore him more than anything, and we do have plans for marriage...but I still worry about it everyday. I'd miss him too much, I'm not a very social person, I have no family whom I'm close with, no friends I'm close to. He's basically the only person I'm close with in my life. I tell him everything, I suffer from severe depression (I'm getting help with this) and I don't know what I'd do without him. I sob myself to snooze every night knowing I'm not going to have him in just a few months.I brought up the topic of giving 'us' a break for a few weeks so we could look how it goes, and he almost went into tears. I don't want to end it, but I feel as if this may be best? He and I have this dream where after he's done the Army, and me university he and I will buy a home in the Lake District...but I'm just scared it won't work out. I DON'T want anyone else, I don't care if it's common meeting others in university, he's the only one I want to spend the relax of my life with...but I'm scared I won't be able to handle it. I'm not an emotionally strong person and I'm just afraid. I don't want to tell him that I wouldn't be able to handle him going into the Army because I DO know that if I were to tell him, he wouldn't go. This is his dream, and in 20-30 years I don't want him looking back and regretting his decision...but I'm starting to feel it's best to at least take a break while he's there. How do I go about telling him this? I know that if I tell him he'll start to say "I'l just pick the police instead, I want you more than anything" etc. he's said if it was a problem he would pick it over the Army..but I'd hate myself for it. He goes on and on some days talking about how he's excited for it, and I would hate getting in the way. I'm sorry if I sound greedy..those aren't my intentions, but I just don't know if I could handle it every. I understand we would be togetehr if we're married on base...but I'd like to finish my university course which lasts over seven years. I feel as if HE wants me to give up everything I've wanted to he can go into the Army. How can I tell him I wouldn't be able to handle it?

Resolved Question: does this count as 'work experience' as I want to proceed to masters education soon?
I just graduated a course in Bachelor of Science in Business Administration a year ago. I'm currently 19 years old. My dad owns a retail store primarily of appliances and other similar goods, or he is into 'merchandising'. And he is also involved in foreign exchange of several currencies. I want to work somewhere else but my dad wants me to work in that store as I'm the only one he trusts, I don't receive a paycheck though but I live in the same roof of which the store resides. My job includes: - being a salesman in which I entertain customers whether in retail or in wholesale [there are salesgirls as well (8 to be exact)] - handling bank transactions, in which I meet clients and I offer to them the rate of the foreign currency and having to deal with them through bank transfer. - checking the overall inventories at the end of the day. - taking care of the cash counter just in case my dad or mom is not around. This is a Family Business. And no, I don't receive the royal treatment. I go to the store at 8 am until 12:30 pm, I have a 1 hour lunch break and go back at 1 until the store closes. I am sort of working full time BUT I am just worried that the university I am applying to next year would not accept me because of this but in any consolation, I learned a lot from this overall experience.

Open Question: How/where can I meet some nice women?
I have a odd problem. I went to college in Britain, and, as such, most of the friends I made are every overseas somewhere. Right after graduating, I took up a job teaching at a university; every my co-workers are considerably older than me. Most of the girls/women I am attracted to turn out to be students (I'm still pretty young, so I wish that's not creepy; not that I would actually make any moves anyway, of course). I've always got on quite well with women in the past, but I've been single and rather lonely ever since coming back home. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding how to meet some nice women? Many of the obvious answers (bars, coffee shops, etc) make me just a bit uncomfortable, since I really don't know if a lady would actually want to be approached by a stranger in these places (although it does work in the movies...it seems like in real life it would just freak her out).

Open Question: I would like to be a professional and private music teacher?
I am in Canada, and just about to go into grade 11. My friends every adore my voice when I sing, but I don't like it. I'm thinking about getting a vocal coach. I play guitar, I wouldn't say I'm a beginner, I guess I'm average. I played flute from grade 7 to grade 9 (I played in grade 9) and I am thinking of buying a flute to receive even better at it. I play pretty well. I am thinking about being a professional music teacher. Teaching music theory, guitar, flute and singing if I can receive my voice to be half decent. What college/university course should I take when I am done highschool? which highschool courses should I take? I am also going to be doing co-op at a school in the music classroom. What else would I be able to tutor as a music teacher? I need to start planning this, so I know what courses to take, but I need a lot of help. NOTE: I do not want to tutor at a school, I want it to be a professional place, or privately. thank you! also, I want to be a professional artist (in music) I want to record and sell my music, and preform. Really, it's my dream. but I'm not sure I'll receive far in that, so I need a backup plan, which is the music teacher idea.

Open Question: Would this be too much to take on?
In 2011, I will be starting my two senior years of school, and from what I've been told the workload increases to about 3 times what it currently is, not to mention we have exams in October 2012, which virtually determine our future in regards to what I'll be able to study and what universities I'll receive into. We have to have a minimum of 6 subjects in 2011, and a minimum of 5 in 2012. You can pick any of the subjects available, and drop any you don't want, except for English, which is compulsory. So I've chosen: - English Advanced - Modern History - Ancient History - Business Studies - Geography (considering dropping in my final year) - Legal Studies I'm very interested in doing Law, politics, or journalism when I leave school but the school I'm at currently doesn't offer Legal Studies, so I have to do it as a correspondence course. I'm the only person in my year doing it, and it will be unsupervised and I'll be working on my possess completely. They do let you do the exams required a few weeks after your other ones, though, because it's harder. I've been thinking about applying to do a pre-graduate journalism course through Sydney University because I'd like to better my English skills (since the high school English curriculum is ridiculous and irrelevant to anything). It would also up my chances of being accepted into that university, which is something that I really need since it's so difficult to receive into. But it would mean a hell of a lot of work. I'm just not sure if I'll be able to handle it every. Any thoughts/opinions/advice?

Okay so I had my heart set on a BlackBerry 9700 on a 24 month deal for £17 a month (including a discount as someone I know works for O2) and that included 600 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet access. Open Question: My mother favors my younger sibling over me?
This isn't a little-girl rant, but more so, a compilation of events that have taken place over the course of my life. Ever since I was a child, my mom has favored my younger sister. I know it is common to feel not as important when a new sibling comes along, but it was far beyond what most classify as "normal". Even my neighbors noticed it early on when both of our families would arrive together for grills and summer parties. The neighbors even spoke up and mentioned it to my dad once. They didn't like the way my mom handled things and their friendships slowly began to drift. I'm not ugly and many people tell me that I'm attractive, but I've never been as pretty as my sister. Whenever I was in school and had art shows, I would always be put on the back burner for something my little sister was doing at the time, even if it were miniscule. My mom put her through beauty pageants and the works and still does to this day. She's her "golden" child. In public, she raves on and on about my sister and doesn't even mention me. She's always made me feel invisible and like an embarrassment to her and the family. We had a family gathering the other day and my aunt commented on how pretty my younger sister was. This, of course, sparked my mom's attention and, OF COURSE, she talked for hours about her. When we went back home I stated that I had never been the pretty one in the family. My mom's response: "Well, there's always going to be someone better than you in life." What the...? I always receive yelled at for everything and I can't recall the last time my sister (who is not young at every anymore, by the way) did chores or was scolded for something she did wrong. Her first car was a brand new sports car and my first car was an older used vehicle (Which I am very thankful for, don't receive me wrong. I'm not complaining about my vehicle because I am extremely lucky to have one. I'm just putting things into perspective.) My mom made me attend a local university so they could keep money...and they're allowing my younger sibling to go to one of the top colleges (the one I originally was accepted to and wanted to go to). It's extremely frustrating and whenever I try to talk to my mom about it, she gets raging mad and denies it repeatedly. What she does makes me feel like a worthless piece of trash...

I started to work there in May, and as soon as I was hired, I went to buy my clothes. My white tops at the time fit very well and were completely appropriate for the job. I wear white tank tops below my blazer because I tend to receive hot quite easily and become sweaty (even if I do wear a deodorant AND an anti-persperant every day). Since I have been hired though, I gained about 15 to 20 pounds. My blazer is tight and my white tops are now more revealing then acceptable. Its embarrassing and frustrating. I have received a warning from my manager saying there were complaints about it. She told me that I now have to wear a collared shirt to work, which makes sense, of course. I work a minimum wage job and on average I only really receive about 3 shifts per week. I commute to university (one hour car ride just to receive there) twice a week, and I live on my possess. So the budget is very tight... I'm actually in the negative most months. The tops I bought for work were about 5$ each when I got them... they are cotton and breath very well. On the other hand, collared shirts are minimum 20$ each in every the stores I looked. And no size seems to fit my bust line correctly. They are tight at the bustline and the arms and very big everywhere else. I feel like a stuffed sausage in those things! Why are the sleeves so tight?? Anyways, If anyone has any fashion advice or suggestions, possible not too costly so I don't break the bank over it. (And yes, I have been going to the gym and I'm working on it..., but I need to remedy to the clothes thing immediately)

Open Question: A Level help please :)?
Hello, I have just picked my subjects that will help me to do Architecture in university, however on UCAS i searched what the requirements are in order to enter that course and every its states is having Art & Design (one course) and 2 other academic subjects. However is it alright if i do Creative Arts (BTEC) instead because this is also equivelant to 2 ALEVELS? Also its does not ask for Physics or Maths A Level as i called up 5 universites they only ask for has the curriculum changed? Sorry i know its a lot to ask but if you can answer as much as you know it would be appreciated, THANK YOU :) Sorry its for universities in the UK :)

Open Question: Current job prospects in Dubai?
Hi, I am looking into the possibility of moving to Dubai, as my girlfriend has recently accepted a teaching contract there. I would just like to know a little about the current prospects of finding work in Dubai and if anyone also has any advice on how best to go about searching for work there, that would be great too. I'm pretty open to working in any position and realise that I may just have to accept what ever I can receive, if I can receive anything at every. In terms of experience: I left school with good GCSE's and A-levels and worked for The Royal Bank of Scotland for three years. I then decided I would like to study for a degree. I spent three years at university and graduated with a 2.1 BSc in 'Business Information Technology'. Following university I went on a tiny business start-up course and set-up a web and graphic design company with a pal of mine. I have been doing this for the last year and we are doing quite well. Anyhow, that's about it. Ideally I would like to find a position that I would like and where I feel I would bring benefit, but as I said earlier, I do realise that it may be a matter of taking what ever I can find. What do you think of my prospects and does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance :o)

Open Question: Is Columbia University a realistic option for me? Need real advice.?
So I'm a public high school junior in FL (transferred from WI recently) and I really want to go to Columbia University in NYC. I never considered it before because I always thought there was no way I could receive in but if I continue to do well in school this year I might have a shot. This is what I have so far: Freshman and Sophomore: Lots of honors courses Junior: pre-cal, French 3, AP Economics, College English, AP Government, College Psychology, College Bio, College Algebra Senior: French 4, College Lit, College Art History, Aerobics, College Humanities, College Calculus, AP environmental science, Journalism 2 Extra Curricular: Softball 4 years, Tennis freshman year, NHS, Student Government Junior and Senior Year, Fellowship of Christian Athletes Junior and Senior, Foreign Language Club vice president, Reef Club (environmental club) GPA: 3.85 unweighted, 4.6 weighted Volunteering: Right now I only have 50 hours but this summer I plan to receive another 75+ volunteering at the state park close by. Also, do you think I should volunteer at another organization or just continue volunteering at the state park? Which would look better? I have a part time job working 15-25 hours a week at Dairy Queen. SATs: I did not take them yet. I take them in a few months and have been preparing extensively on them. Any pointers on what I need to receive on them to receive into Columbia and how much weight Columbia puts on SATs vs other factors. Oh yea, and I'm hispanic. I know this is a lot of information but this is really important to me. If anyone has had any experience with Columbia University or any other ivies please give me advice on what I should put most of my focus on and what I need to work on before I apply in a year. This would be so helpful! I know I don't have as good applications as other candidates but I can't really afford to go on fancy study abroad internships or overseas volunteering. I'm trying to do the best with the resources that I have. Thank you! 1 day ago - 1 week left to answer. Additional Details Do you think I should apply Early Decision to increase my chances? I'm visiting it this summer and is definitely my first choice.
